Storyline:
The narrator is at an observatory in Ottershaw when explosions are witnessed on Mars, causing interest among the scientific community. Later a "meteor" lands on Horsell Common, southwest of London, close to the narrator's home in Woking, Surrey. He is among the first to discover that the object is a space-going artificial cylinder. When the cylinder opens, the Martians — bulky, octopus-like creatures the size of a bear — briefly emerge, show difficulty in coping with the Earth's atmosphere, and rapidly retreat into the cylinder. A human deputation moves towards the cylinder, but the Martians incinerate them with a heat-ray weapon, before beginning the construction of alien machinery.

After the attack, the narrator takes his wife to Leatherhead to stay with relatives until the threat is eliminated. Upon returning home, he discovers the Martians have assembled towering three-legged "fighting-machines" armed with a heat-ray and a chemical weapon: "the black smoke". These Tripods easily defeat army units positioned around the crater and proceed to attack surrounding communities. Fleeing the scene, the narrator meets a retreating artilleryman, who tells him that another cylinder has landed between Woking and Leatherhead, cutting the narrator off from his wife. The two men try to escape together, but are separated at the Shepperton to Weybridge Ferry during a Martian attack on Shepperton. One of the Martian fighting machines is brought down in the River Thames by British artillery, causing its hot heat-ray equipment to almost boil the water as the narrator and countless others try to cross the river into Middlesex.

More cylinders land across southern England, and a panicked flight out of London begins, including the narrator's brother who flees to the Essex coast. The torpedo ram HMS Thunder Child destroys two tripods before being sunk by the Martians, though this allows the ship carrying the narrator's brother and his two female travelling companions to escape to continental Europe. Shortly after, all organised resistance has ceased, and the Tripods roam the shattered landscape unhindered. Red weed, a fast growing Martian form of vegetation, spreads over the landscape, aggressively overcoming the Earth's ecology, in much the same way as the Martians have overcome human civilisation.

The narrator takes refuge in a ruined building shortly before a Martian cylinder lands nearby, trapping him with a mentally unstable curate he had originally met near Shepperton. The curate has been traumatised by the invasion and believes the Martians to be satanic creatures heralding the advent of Armageddon. For several days, the narrator desperately tries to calm the clergyman, and avoid attracting attention, while witnessing the Martians' daily routine, which includes feeding on humans by direct blood transfusion. The curate's evangelical outbursts finally lead the Martians to their hiding place despite the narrator resorting to violence in order to silence him. While the narrator escapes detection, the clergyman's unconscious body is dragged away.

The Martians eventually depart, and the Narrator heads towards Central London. En route he once again encounters the artilleryman who entertains grandiose plans to rebuild civilisation underground, but the artilleryman's quixotic nature is shown by the slow progress of an unimpressive trench he has been digging. The narrator heads into a deserted London and finally decides to give up his life by rushing towards the Martians, only to discover they, along with the Red Weed, have succumbed to terrestrial pathogenic bacteria, to which they have no immunity. At the conclusion, society begins to return to normal and the narrator returns to his home to find himself unexpectedly reunited with his wife. They, along with the rest of humanity, are faced with a new and expanded universe as a result of the invasion.
Style Of Writing:
The War of the Worlds is written in a journalistic style, as if a factual account of the invasion, which helps to make the story reasonable. The chapter headings are also similar to newspaper headlines. The narrator is a middle class scientific journalist living in Woking, south west of London, characteristics which make him very similar to Wells himself at the time of writing. The Narrator describes most of the events from first hand observation, often with precise and scientific detail, but also reports events later told to him by his younger brother, to provide a wider perspective on the invasion. The narrator and his brother are not named; neither are the key characters of the artilleryman and the curate.

my point: Even this kind of story is my interest, it is a boring experience while reading this book. I don't like journalistic style. The story which focuses only one man experience is not attractive to me. But, the story still good even though I realise that the story was different from the film edition made by Steven Spielberg.

Michael Biehn was considered for the role of Col. Quaritch. Cameron rejected him because he'd already cast Sigourney Weaver, and he didn't want people to think it was Aliens (1986) all over again.

James Cameron originally planned to have the film completed for release in 1999. At the time, the special effects he wanted increased the budget to $400 million. No studio would fund the film, and it was shelved for almost 10 years.

The movie is 40% live action and 60% photo-realistic CGI. A lot of motion capture technology was used for the CGI scenes.

James Cameron was convinced that CGI effects had progressed enough to make this film when he saw Gollum in The Lord of the Ring: The Two Towers (2002).

Promotional items were shipped to cinemas under the name "Project 880".

Finally, i've reached home. Yeah, finally sem 4 is over. No need to think bout all the result. It's time to chill out. Today, already renew my driving licence. Hmm.. just noticed that my hometown now got a place for us to play bowling. Iron Man 2, huh... can't wait to see. But, still need to wait. Oo money and budget. Heh. Even torrent already available, cannot la. See in cinema more cantek...

Owh, one thing. I saw a vid, while blogwalking. It's about Islam and Malaysian's attitude toward it. It is a vid bout someone talking bout Israk Mikraj and said that it is a hoax. What the.. how dare he said that. Don't want to attach the vid, just keep searching in others blog. This kind of man need to be cast away from malaysia.

Frances Eliza Hodgson was born on November 24, 1849, in Manchester, England, the third of Edwin Hodgson's and Eliza Boond's five children. Her father ran a prosperous firm which specialized in the trade of decorative arts for the interiors of houses. At the time, Manchester was experiencing a textile boom which infused the town with a rising middle-class, and because these families were erecting magnificent houses, Hodgson's merchandise was in demand. The prosperity of the Hodgson family was cut short in 1854 when Edwin suffered a stroke. Even more devastating to the family fortune was the American Civil War, which caused a cessation of cotton shipments from Southern plantations, crippling Manchester's economy. Eliza Hodgson decided to emigrate to America, and in 1865, when Burnett was sixteen, the family settled in a small town about twenty-five miles from Knoxville, Tennessee. This move would prove instrumental in Burnett's development as a writer. Although she had always been obsessed with storytelling and often amused her schoolmates by acting out tales of adventure and romance, the financial strain of the emigration caused her to turn to writing as a means of supplementing the family's income. The move from industrial England to rural America was for the family a journey to the green, natural world that would become a central theme in many of Burnett's later works, including The Secret Garden.

Burnett's first published story, "Miss Carruthers' Engagement," appeared in a magazine called Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. After the death of her mother in 1872, the family became increasingly dependent on her writing income. She accelerated her career as a popular writer and sold stories to many magazines. In September of 1873 she married Swann Burnett, a doctor from Tennessee who was preparing to specialize in the treatment of the eye and ear. He wished to further his specialty by studying in Europe, and Burnett financed his wish, once again becoming responsible for the bulk of her family's income. In 1874, she gave birth to her son Lionel and began work on her first major novel, The Lass o' Lowries. The critical response was encouraging, and many reviews compared Burnett's work to that of Charlotte Brontë and Henry James. In 1879 she published her novel Haworth, her first attempt at serious fiction. Later that same year, one of her first children's stories appeared in St. Nicholas, a magazine in which she would publish for years to come. It is at this time that Burnett, who was constantly battling illness, acquainted herself with the philosophies of Spiritualism, Theosophy, Mind Healing, and Christian Science. These philosophies' ideas about the healing powers of the mind became a crucial motif in much of her writing, most notably in A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, and The Lost Prince.

In 1886 Little Lord Fauntleroy, the book that transformed Burnett's life, was published. It became a runaway bestseller in America and England. While the success of the book branded Burnett a popular and romantic writer rather than a serious artist, it provided her with enough income to free her from an unhappy marriage and allow her to travel through Europe. In 1890 Burnett's first son Lionel was diagnosed with consumption and died that same year. By 1898, Burnett and Swann divorced by mutual consent, and she leased a country house in England where she immersed herself in her passion for gardening. The estate was surrounded by several walled gardens, one of which, a rose garden, served as her outdoor workroom. It was here that the idea of The Secret Garden was born.

Over the course of her life, Burnett wrote more than forty books, for both adults and children. While her adult novels are considered to be quite sentimental, her children's books have withstood the fickleness of literary fashions. The Secret Garden, the story of how Mary Lennox and her friends find independence as they tend their garden, has been described as one of the most satisfying children's books ever written. Frances Hodgson Burnett died of congestive heart failure on October 29, 1924.

simple tips on how to spot the mistake in film

Hye guyz,

Today, I want to share something with my entire blog viewer. All of you surely notice my GoofSpot blog, right? Yah, the blog that I use to spot the mistake in any big movie neither Holly nor Malay. So, because of my ability, lots of praise I got. Hehehe.. x megah k. Just cakap2 je.

I’m not a magician.

I’m not a hawk-eye guy.

I’m also not a superman with the laser beam eye.

Let me give you some nice trick to spot the mistake in any film.

Of course you need to watch the film first. But, remember this. Watch the film to spot the mistake, not the storyline. A storyline can make your eyes unnoticed the mistake. Filmmakers create a big storyline to mesmerize your eyes. More bigger the storyline, the more mistake you can spot. Believe or not, just stay on Michael Bay film. Look how big and costly he making a film. So, more action also dig up more mistakes. But, surely you don’t realize it if you just watch on the action sequence rather than thinking the continuity that the editor edited in making the film.

Watch the props and the setting, not the action that the actor/ess act. Example, in gunshot scene. Keep an eye on the thing that happens near or around the main focus. Take a deep look at the smoke, at the bottle, scattered bullet on the floor, or anything behind the main focus. Take a deep look when the camera changes the shot. Question yourself. Is it on the same position when the angle changes? If your answer is yes, that is not a mistake. If no, you know what to say…

If you still hardly enough trying but cannot seach for it, don’t worry. Please search ‘movie mistake’ via internet. You will notice that there are a lots of movie mistake website. But, lot of them does not contain pic, so this is a challenge for you. Search the truth by watching the scene that the web wrote. This is not an easy job. To search a mistake even been told by someone is not keje kacang yer. Question yourself. Did you remember the scene that the web told? If yes, skip the movie; watch the scene again and again. Keep an eye on each thing. Soon, you will find it.

But, remember one thing. Not all you think a mistake is a mistake. Sometime, you curiously want the film to be real enough until you appear to judge the film like you judge the real world. Remember, film is for fun. Editing sometime plays important role. Editing is not a mistake, the action and the setting in it is a mistake.

A few days ago, before I went home relaxing my mind and put myself in hibernation mood, I had a chance to watch a flute performance from a musician from Argentina. A melodious tune yet a nice performance for those who want to relax their mind after exam.

I went there actually because misinterpreted the word ‘tango’. I’ve thought of dancing, dance beat but.. huh, I got just a flute musician.

Hahaha… okeyh

Yasmin used the song from Aaja Nachle, Ore Piya. At first, I thought that this song was a remake by Malaysian Indian singer. Yet, I know that it was a song by Rafat Fateh Ali Khan. Fuh.. the melody was so tremendous ..

The melody touches my soul. The lyric (eventhough i did not understand it) also very marvelous.

Sacry tol film 2.. rite.. even first time i watch it alone while 8tv telecast it, the spirit of the movie still in my mind. I still remember a scene where the travelers keeps walking seaching for the forest exits and soon, realized that there are walking in circle. Soon, nightmare encounters.

It's been so long huh we did get that kind of movie.. even cloverfield and Quarantine never catch up the style.. BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was so real..

I'm not reviewing the movie.. but, i have something to show.. a same kind of movie..

It will make all of you think... are all of you alone eventhough no one around you?....

These Are My Lecturers U Never Know...

Yesterday, Thursday was my last day of lectures. Hmm.. i will sit my first exam on 6th Nov. Huhu.. Too long to wait huh? Should i return home or just stay here? That question keeps playing in my mind right now. Ok.. later la i pick one sunflower and play 'return of not' with it. Hehe.. ok2..What I want to story story to u today? Hmm.. I keep thinking to derailed a little bit from the normal post. Hmm. This blog, is in English n, what you always read here everyday are 'improvement dose of post".. i'll try my best to devotes by grammar to the right way..

I want to tell u bout two of my lectures. Why? Because i'm the only one in my SQUAD 20 who having a separated class in two different subject. At first, I kept thinking why God make my to be separated from others. Soon, i realize that this is the best way for me to approaches others and get to knows other better. Maybe, i can be someone different.. and being someone different is amazing.

Wacana Akademik Bahasa Melayu. While others class lectured by female lectures, my class was not. Let me introduces u to...

EN. SAMSUDIN my lecturer 4 wacana... (fawez punye PA).. huhu.. and now, he was my lecturers. Talented in joking and a very flexible person to deal with.

and this are my class mate.. only me and Barathi are from sem 3. Others are from sem 2 and 1. Some from Language Faculty.. some from Science and Math .. there are may Chinese in my class.. and .. we are 1Malaysia class.. rite? yuhoo.. ok.. whatever.. nice to know all of you..

and... this is my Bhasa Thay (Thai language) khun khru (teacher/lecturer).. Puan Norizan Che Su.. a Thai language lecturer from UPM. Huh, far huh? But, I salute on her effort to teach us even though the students just in a small group. Luckily, we are only for in a class. So, everyone get a full attention in mastering Thai language. But, I admitted to her that it's hard to master this language. Now, i can only talk a little bit of greeting and number.. hehe.. n some of word lah.. huh .. but, if the native speaker of thai speaks to me.. huh, mampos dol.. silent jer la.. hahaha.. but, next sem i'll take Bhasa Thai 2.. it is more harder.. and hmm.. need to boost my effort loooo.. huhu..

The Illusionist: Better U Go & Watch It.. Now!

Yesterday, I spend some of my ample time watching a movie. I choose to watch a 2007 movie entitled The Illusionist. Did you ever heard of it? I’m sure for those who always visit CD’s shop to buy movie will know about this film. Even this film was not showed in cinema, maybe for those who intend to watch an illusionist performing the various magic tricks will tend to lend their eyes. First look, this movie is just a simple Grade B movie. Without a well known production company, that is the label that I always put in my mind. Even though the movie’s actors and actresses are so mesmerizing, I still don’t have a point to watch this movie. But, don’t know how. I tend to have a moment to look at this movie and my comment is IT MESMERIZE MY EYES, BULL, HOW HE.. blab la bla.. I QUIETLY SHOCK WITH THE ENDING.. Very catchy storyline and huh.. I’m clueless to say a word dude.

The Illusionist directed by Neil Burger, starring Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti in main roles. When I read Wikipedia, I realize that this film premieres in 2006 Sundance Film Festival. The story revolves around an illusionist who has an affair with a crown prince lover. It is a very tricky storyline for sure. Eisenhem (Edward Norton) was given a gift of magic according to legend. When he is young, he had an affair with a Duchess Sophie (Jessica Beil). But, with the gaps of strata, he cannot marry the lady. In the same time, Prince Leopold also wants the Duchess. Time pass by and Eisenhem now a well known illusionist. He performs magic in front of the audiences. On day, his performance watched by the Prince and Duchess. Love start to rose back. One night, Duchess Sophie was killed. By who?

In the nutshell, the script of the movie tries to manipulate the viewers on some issues regarding the illusionist. What I see here is, whatever we keep thinking also can trick us.. Even after I watch this movie, I keep labelling this movie as one of magic trick make by the director itself. The plot contains the era of well known performances of magic which I still remember, around 90’s something. But, I may conclude that this movie was set in the era of Houdini, the first ever magician who try to trick the viewers by the slack of hand and mind. Everything can be explained with science and physic. So, watch this movie and mesmerize by the question that will rise up: illusion is trick or magic?

A STORY OF A FRENDSHIP

3rd day of raya. so fast huh.. day by day, time walks so fast. Sometime, we did not realize that we were 20's and became what we were. Today, I have a visit to my teacher's Open House with my old fellow friends. This was the day we gathered together and talks about our life now. My friends, there are all grown up. Some were married, and some were still single and others are coupled. All my friends were spread to the entire place and today, we gathered back.

The story begins...

Night of Raya, I have send some message to all my fellow friends and teachers. Inside the name list was the name of my English Teacher. We call her Teacher Zuhana. I've waited for some time for her to reply. But, I slept waiting. The next day, I have seen 8 messages after I woke up. One of the messages was from Teacher Zuhana. The message invited us to her open house on the third day of raya. I thought of asking my friend whether they also got the messages. I send a omessage to Tiqah (now in UUM) and Bunny (now in UUM too).. but, only Tiqah reply. Unluckily, she has another agenda that day. So, she will not come.

That day (the 3rd day of raya), approximately 10.15 a.m, I have got a miscall from Bunny. He call me twice but I did not noticed it. So, I called him back. Injected him with some beautiful words and so on, he agreed to accompany me. About 11 a.m, I went to picked him up at his own house. Eating some Raya's kuih at his house, I left some empty chamber inside my stomach for Teacher's well known nasi ayam. Azlin (now in UiTM), was already there. Waiting for me and my friend. Before we went to Teacher's house, Bunny called some of our friends. We did not realize that other friends did not even notice about Teaher's Open House.

We arrived at teacher's house about 11a.m. I have no problem to park the car. The car was parked safely in front of my teacher's house. That time, there were so many guests. Some I might remember their face and some I never ever realized that I have seen them. My teacher welcomed us and invited us to join the kenduri. In the main table, there were ayam masak merah and kari dalca. Next to it, was a bucket of nasi merah. Delicious. While my friend, Bunny have some talk with Azlin, I grab the food. East first, talk later. I have ate it until my stomach says 'stop'.

We have some talk. Only three of us were on the same batch. Others were juniors. After a few minutes, we went to the kitchen. Nobody there. Then, the gossiping session begins. Huh, I'm shocked when I know that Lin was already boyfriended. So damned shock. While Bunny still says that he will be the last person to marry in our batch. What ever. While waiting for the rest of our friends to arrive, we talked more (lots of gossip) and help to maintain the amount of dishes on the main table.

Amar, Syazane, Didi, Zhafri, Aizuan arrived with young lady Ezani. Ezani dressed beautifully that day. The way she dressed was so beautiful. Red with black, a brilliant match. We have some chat before Awie, Aida and Nana arrived. Aida was so beautiful. My first look at her did not catch her pretty face. When I look twice I realize that was her. Nana was so beautiful in green too. From that conversation, I know what all my friends had done with their life. Aida, now worked with HPA, a company that maintained their product in Islamic way. While Nana still studying in Kolej Komuniti Tambun Tulang. Suddenly, I have got a message, Nurul (my form 6 friend) asked me where am I. Argh, she fooled me because she was now sitting behind me. I keep questioning myself, why she was invited?? How she know Teacher? Oo... because she have a sister that studying in SMK Abi.. thats why la...

We have agreed to visit other teacher's house on Thursday. But, because of some problem, we went to visit other teacher's house on the same day. We arrived at Cikgu Zul's house at 4 p.m and after 45 minutes, we have visited Cikgu Halim's house. Bunny and Lin hitched my car while the rest hitched Awie's car. At the end of the day, Bunny has been hitch by his mother in front of Cikgu Halim's house. So, I sent Azlin to her house. Azlin remembered me that her house was deep inside the village. I said, don't worry because I am amateur.. While drives her, Azlin showed me the rest of our friends house. Shame on me, five years of friendship, I did not have an effort to search for my own friends house.Okeyh, when sending her to her house, I am stucked. OMG, so damned. The big car stuck in a small road. A test to myself as a driver. Luckily, I managed to get out safely. Nothing happpen. But, the stuck-incident, fuh... so heart-beating time.

Then, I went house and kept thinking about friendship. I still remember that Azlin says that I am to shy before this (I mean when we still studied in SMK Abi).. and now, I am different. Love to talked nonsense because she was some sort of ceramah kind of women. Fuh, luckily she isjust a friend. Maybe if she was my girlfriend.. cannot imagine la... I still remember, when I looked at their face, my form 5 memories kept coming. Huhu. if I can turned back time.. But, life must go on and this is my life.

Interlanguage is the type of language produced by second- and foreign- language learners who are in the process of learning a language. In language learning, learner’s errors are caused by several different processes. These include:
a. borrowing patterns from the mother tongue
b. extending patterns from the target language.
c. Expressing meanings using the words and grammar which are already known

Interlanguage refers to the separateness of a second language learner’s system, a system that has a structurally intermediate status between the native and target language
Interlanguage is neither the system of the native language nor the system of the target language, but instead falls between the two; it is a system based upon the best attempt of learners to provide order and structure to the linguistic stimuli surrounding them. By a gradual process of trial and error and hypothesis testing, learners slowly and tediously succeed in establishing closer and closer approximations to the system used by native speakers of the language.

Selinker(1972) coined the term ‘interlanguage’ to refer to the systematic knowledge of an L2 which is independent of both these learner’s L1 and the target language. The term has come to be used with different but related meanings: (1) to refer to the series of interlocking systems which characterize acquisition, (2) to refer to the system that is observed at a single stage of development (‘an interlanguage’), and (3) to refer to particular L1/L2 combinations(for example, L1 French/L2 English v. L1 Japanese/L2 English). Other terms that refer to the same basic idea are ‘approximative system’ (Nemser 1971) and ‘transitional competence’ (Corder 1967)

Teachers can give appropriate feedback after checking out learner’s interlanguage. Learners need not worry so much about making mistakes. They can assume that making mistakes is a procedure of development from mother tongue to Second Language.

The variable shape of interlanguage

The concept of interlanguage has had a majaor impact on the field of second language acquisition. Studies on interlanguage focus on the linguistic and psychological aspects of second language acquisition research.
I will first outline how the interlanguage assumption developed. Since the interlanguage concept is not only important for the development of the students‘ grammar system, I will then explore how it applies to other components of language. I will also focus on the consequences of the concept for the teacher and his work in the classroom.
Before the 1960‘s language was not considered to be a mental phenomenon. Like other forms of human behavior language is learnt by processes of habit formation. A child learns his mother tongue by imitating the sounds and patterns he hears around him. By approval or disapproval, adults reinforce the child‘s attempts and lead the efforts to the correct forms. Under the influence of cognitive linguists this explanation of first language acquisition was criticized. Language cannot be verbal behavior only, since children are able to produce an infinite number of utterances that have never heard before. This creativity is only possible because a child develops a system of rules. A large number of studies has shown that children actually do construct their own rule system, which develops gradually until it corresponds to the system of the adults. There is also evidence that they pass through similar stages acquiring grammatical rules. Through the influence of cognitive linguists and first language aquisition research the notion developed that second language learners, too, could be viewed as actively constructing rules from the data they encounter and that they gradually adapt these rules in the direction of the target language. However wrong and inappropriate learners‘ sentences may be in regard to the target language system, they are grammatical in their own terms, since they are a product of the learner‘s own language system. This system gradually develops towards the rule-system of the target language.
The various shapes of the learnber‘s language competence are called interlanguage. The term draws attention to the fact that the learners’ language system is neither that of his mother tongue nor that of the second language, but contains elements of both. Therefore, errors need not be seen as signs of failure only, but as evidence of the learner‘s developing system.
While the behaviorist approach led to teaching methods which use drills and consider errors as signs of failure, the concept of interlanguage liberated language teaching and paved the way for communicative teaching methods. Since errors are considered a reflection of the students‘ temporary language system and therefore a natural part of the learning process, teachers could now use teaching activities which did not call for constant supervision of the student‘s language. Group work and pair work became suitable means for language learning.

Assumption:
When the learner is attempting to communicate in the target language, he employs a linguistic system distinct from the source and the target language.

There is a continuum from the source language through successive learning stages to the acquisition of the target language. For every stage there is an interlanguage, one for the learner's first attempts to communicate in the target language, one for his near-perfect use of it, and many more in-between. This evolutuon is presumably marked at every stage by systemic influence from the source language. It also represents an accretion of elements from the target language. The various stages can be defined in quantitative and qualitative terms.

Okays.. first time I watch Transformers 2: revenge of the fallen.. I expect something that more bombastic.. and surely yeah.. I’ve got it.. but, when my eyes focusing on the movie.. I recognize something wrong ‘bout this movie..

Okay.. if you notice. There are three part you’ll see the shadow of a steady-cam camera… let’s have a look at this three pic.. okay…. Please have a deep look at the red circle that I’ve made…

FIRST WEEK SOLEMNESS

I’ve past the first week, with cloudy heart-feeling.. don’t know why, maybe something missing inside… but, what is it???

A. Introduction

Stephen Krashen (University of Southern California) is an expert in the field of linguistics, specializing in theories of language acquisition and development. Much of his recent research has involved the study of non-English and bilingual language acquisition. During the past 20 years, he has published well over 100 books and articles and has been invited to deliver over 300 lectures at universities throughout the United States and Canada.

This is a brief description of Krashen's widely known and well accepted theory of second language acquisition, which has had a large impact in all areas of second language research and teaching since the 1980s.

B. Description of Krashen's Theory of Second Language Acquisition

Krashen's theory of second language acquisition consists of five main hypotheses:

* the Acquisition-Learning hypothesis,

* the Monitor hypothesis,

* the Natural Order hypothesis,

* the Input hypothesis,

* and the Affective Filter hypothesis.

The Acquisition-Learning distinction is the most fundamental of all the hypotheses in Krashen's theory and the most widely known among linguists and language practitioners.

According to Krashen there are two independent systems of second language performance: 'the acquired system' and 'the learned system'. The 'acquired system' or 'acquisition' is the product of a subconscious process very similar to the process children undergo when they acquire their first language. It requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication - in which speakers are concentrated not in the form of their utterances, but in the communicative act.

The 'learned system' or 'learning' is the product of formal instruction and it comprises a conscious process which results in conscious knowledge 'about' the language, for example knowledge of grammar rules. According to Krashen 'learning' is less important than 'acquisition'.

The Monitor hypothesis explains the relationship between acquisition and learning and defines the influence of the latter on the former. The monitoring function is the practical result of the learned grammar. According to Krashen, the acquisition system is the utterance initiator, while the learning system performs the role of the 'monitor' or the 'editor'. The 'monitor' acts in a planning, editing and correcting function when three specific conditions are met: that is, the second language learner has sufficient time at his/her disposal, he/she focuses on form or thinks about correctness, and he/she knows the rule.

It appears that the role of conscious learning is somewhat limited in second language performance. According to Krashen, the role of the monitor is - or should be - minor, being used only to correct deviations from 'normal' speech and to give speech a more 'polished' appearance.

Krashen also suggests that there is individual variation among language learners with regard to 'monitor' use. He distinguishes those learners that use the 'monitor' all the time (over-users); those learners who have not learned or who prefer not to use their conscious knowledge (under-users); and those learners that use the 'monitor' appropriately (optimal users). An evaluation of the person's psychological profile can help to determine to what group they belong. Usually extroverts are under-users, while introverts and perfectionists are over-users. Lack of self-confidence is frequently related to the over-use of the 'monitor'. The Natural Order hypothesis is based on research findings (Dulay & Burt, 1974; Fathman, 1975; Makino, 1980 cited in Krashen, 1987) which suggested that the acquisition of grammatical structures follows a 'natural order' which is predictable. For a given language, some grammatical structures tend to be acquired early while others late. This order seemed to be independent of the learners' age, L1 background, conditions of exposure, and although the agreement between individual acquirers was not always 100% in the studies, there were statistically significant similarities that reinforced the existence of a Natural Order of language acquisition. Krashen however points out that the implication of the natural order hypothesis is not that a language program syllabus should be based on the order found in the studies. In fact, he rejects grammatical sequencing when the goal is language acquisition.

The Input hypothesis is Krashen's attempt to explain how the learner acquires a second language. In other words, this hypothesis is Krashen's explanation of how second language acquisition takes place. So, the Input hypothesis is only concerned with 'acquisition', not 'learning'. According to this hypothesis, the learner improves and progresses along the 'natural order' when he/she receives second language 'input' that is one step beyond his/her current stage of linguistic competence. For example, if a learner is at a stage 'i', then acquisition takes place when he/she is exposed to 'Comprehensible Input' that belongs to level 'i + 1'. Since not all of the learners can be at the same level of linguistic competence at the same time, Krashen suggests that natural communicative input is the key to designing a syllabus, ensuring in this way that each learner will receive some 'i + 1' input that is appropriate for his/her current stage of linguistic competence.

Finally, the fifth hypothesis, the Affective Filter hypothesis, embodies Krashen's view that a number of 'affective variables' play a facilitative, but non-causal, role in second language acquisition. These variables include: motivation, self-confidence and anxiety. Krashen claims that learners with high motivation, self-confidence, a good self-image, and a low level of anxiety are better equipped for success in second language acquisition. Low motivation, low self-esteem, and debilitating anxiety can combine to 'raise' the affective filter and form a 'mental block' that prevents comprehensible input from being used for acquisition. In other words, when the filter is 'up' it impedes language acquisition. On the other hand, positive affect is necessary, but not sufficient on its own, for acquisition to take place.

F. The Role of Grammar in Krashen's View

According to Krashen, the study of the structure of the language can have general educational advantages and values that high schools and colleges may want to include in their language programs. It should be clear, however, that examining irregularity, formulating rules and teaching complex facts about the target language is not language teaching, but rather is "language appreciation" or linguistics.

The only instance in which the teaching of grammar can result in language acquisition (and proficiency) is when the students are interested in the subject and the target language is used as a medium of instruction. Very often, when this occurs, both teachers and students are convinced that the study of formal grammar is essential for second language acquisition, and the teacher is skillful enough to present explanations in the target language so that the students understand. In other words, the teacher talk meets the requirements for comprehensible input and perhaps with the students' participation the classroom becomes an environment suitable for acquisition. Also, the filter is low in regard to the language of explanation, as the students' conscious efforts are usually on the subject matter, on what is being talked about, and not the medium.

This is a subtle point. In effect, both teachers and students are deceiving themselves. They believe that it is the subject matter itself, the study of grammar, that is responsible for the students' progress, but in reality their progress is coming from the medium and not the message. Any subject matter that held their interest would do just as well.

Ah.. Tamil/Telugu movie…

just more promo, less entertainment… at first.. this was my thought..

But, I never put in my mind that Tamil/Telugu cinema cannot produce some great Hollywood-style flick. I’ve watch Sivaji (Malay’s known Tamil film for this decade… hmm..), It’s awesome… Superstar Rajnikanth do it well. Of course he does it well, he’s a superstar right?? Huhu..

Back to Kamal Hassan’s Dasavatharam.. Even this movie was released a year ago, why I as a malay want to review this Tamil/Telugu movie and paste it in my blog?? Why I’ve bought the DvD and watch it?? Some Malay’s will look weird at me or someone who take a look at Tamil/Telugu cinema. But, I’m not the one who racist to movies.. Every movies, I watch without considering the language and the theme… every producers, film makers and directors have their own way to create a movie.. So, open your mind.. Sometime, movies that you watch as a trash is full of cash..

Kamal Hassan.. Everyone know him.. A superstar.. I’ve know his name when he act in Hey Ram! With SRK.. And now, I can consider that this is my second Kamal Hassan’s movie that I’ve watch…

Dasavatharam according to the subtitle means Ten Incarnation. Ah, means??? This is the special part of this movie. This movie, for the first time in world (not Tamil/Telugu) cinema, one superstar played 10 different roles inside one movie. A world record that’s never achieve even by Hollywood.

This movie contains lots of subplot. Arrgh, sometime, I cannot catch up every plot. But, each subplot connected to each other and end with just one conclusion which is..

26^th December’s Tsunami..

Tsunami??? Yup… believe it.. I thought maybe any Hollywood filmmakers want to filmed the chaos that happened during that’s event. Believe it or not, Tamil/Telugu’s filmmakers had done it first.

So, when I talk about tsunami, what this movie all about..??

How can it’s end with that mother nature catastrophe??

This is the main plot…

12^th Century, before the Cristianity and Islam step foot on earth (according to this movie, not me. Hehe), there’s Hinduism. Two god’s devotees battle against each other. The king, which is Lord Shiva’s devotee want to cleans up his land that also contains Lord Vishnu’s devotees. Every people that scared to the king embraced to Lord Shiva except one man, Rangarajan (Kamal Hassan). He was captured by the king and tied together with Lord Vishnu’s idol. Then, he together with the idol was sunk in the middle of the ocean.

21th century. In US, a harmful virus has been created. Govindharajan (again, Kamal Hassan) is in charge. There’s been an accident occurred in the lab that make Govind try to prevent others (the government) from used it. But, the decision creates an unhappy situation. So, ex-CIA Cristian Fletcher (also, Kamal Hassan) is hired to steal the deadly virus from Govind’s hand.

While being chasing by Flecther, Govind was helps by his friend, a taxi driver. While waiting his friend at the courier service, he suddenly realizes that the virus is wrongly sent to Chennai by his friend.

The cat and mouse game getting harder here..

Govind flies to Chennai… a problems getting harder when the box reaches the old woman (one again, Kamal Hassan) that very stubborn. The game is the one who cherish the movie.

The subplot that appears actually not too important. It just a extra story to explain the main theme…

There is a plot about sand ‘pirates’… this is where another Kamal Hassan’s character appears … nothing related to the mainplot.. but, this subplot played an important part in Govind journey to save the world. Another subplot is about a singer (once again, Kamal Hassan) who suffer cancer… There is also a subplot about a woman in search of her son… (also played by Kamal Hassan)

Ah, at the early part of the movie, Kamal Hassan talks about Chaos Theory…

Let me explains it… Chaos Theory is some incident that happen, sometime connects to other event. Hmm.. easy to says as chain reaction… hmm.. Sometime, Chaos Theory also being known as The Butterfly Effect.. hmm

Hah..this might make all of you understand..

According to Wikipedia, chaos theory describe the behavior of certain dynamical systems, that is systems whose states evolve with time that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initial condition (popularly referred as the butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponential growth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior of chaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully defined by their initial conditions with no random elements involved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos or simply chaos. Chaotic behavior is also observed in natural systems, such as weather. This may be explained by a chaos-theoretical analysis of a mathematical model of such a system, embodying the laws of physics that are relevant for the natural system…

Aaaargh… I’m derailed already… let’s get back to Dasavatharam…

Let’s look at the storyline… for me.. the storyline is not so complicated. Something about cat and mouse game is not hard for viewers to chew. 1 hour and a half before intermission is very heart-beating, very rare for me because for Indian film, a part before intermission is where the problem start to rise.. not, the problem rise inside the story before intermission.. hmm.. whatever… overall, storyline great..

The dialogue sometimes good and sometime make the scene looks noisy… I realize that after intermission, no scene that silent from talking. After another’s stop, another’s will start. But, the dialogue is very catchy.. sometime make me laugh.. good…

Music is awesome.. Himesh Reshammiya’s music is very good for moviegoers to hum.. Mukunda Mukunda, Oh Ho Sanam and Kallai Mattum Kandal are good track to listen to.. Background score is just simple but astounding.

Kamal Hassan’s character is stable. He plays each role perfectly but, sometime when he overdose while acting, he can controlled and back to his character... When he becomes Bush, he acts like him. When he is Fletcher, he is him. When he is Govind.. hmm.. overall he’s a superstar…

Mallika Sherawat appeared as Fletcher’s wife is not bright enough. She’s good in sexy costumes but cannot brought an excellent performances.. what a waste.. luckily she die early.. hahahaha.. I like it.. huhuu… Kamal Hassan’s efforts should been proud of. It’s not easy to locate all character that only played by him in one scene.. it need a perfect timing and creative idea..

hmm.. hah.. sets and setting. The 12^th century scene is awesome.. this is the introduction for the viewers to take a deeper look at Dasavatharam. The tsunami’s CGI is great. Good effort for CGI team… and the change between camera angle also great and amazing. Dasavatharam use lots of high and long shots… and I like it.. yea.. from the start we’ve seen the high camera angle that straightly moving from a church, passing through a mosque then a temple… awesome … the Bush’s presidential room is perfectly described.. it’s look like we’ve watch a Hollywood flick..

Overall.. Dasavatharam creates a new horizon in Tamil/Telugu cinema… and.. my perception to Tamil/Telugu cinema change...
